Surface Area & Deductions
Accurate paint estimating begins with measuring perimeter wall length and multiplying by ceiling height. Standard trade rules deduct 21 square feet for each standard interior door and 15 square feet for each standard window. For rooms with heavy architectural moldings, deduct openings only if window trim is receiving contrasting enamel paint.
Spreading Rates & Porosity
While premium latex paints rate at 350 to 400 square feet per gallon on pre-primed drywall, raw unprimed drywall, textured stucco, or masonry will absorb significantly more liquid, dropping practical coverage to 250 square feet per gallon. Always apply a dedicated PVA primer on fresh joint compound before finish coats.
Two-Coat Coverage Rule
Even paints advertised as "one-coat coverage" require two full coats when making dramatic color transitions, painting over patched surfaces, or applying deep vibrant hues. Two coats create a uniform film build (minimum 1.5 to 2.0 mils dry film thickness) necessary for true scrub resistance and stain washability.
Leftover Touch-Up Allocation
Always order an extra 10% volume or round up to the nearest whole gallon container. Keeping one quart to one gallon of original paint tightly sealed in airtight containers prevents color mismatching during future drywall repairs, baseboard scuff maintenance, and plumbing access patching.
