Cubic Yard Volume Formulas
Concrete volume is calculated in cubic yards using the statutory formula: Volume (cu yd) = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. For standard 4-inch residential slabs, multiply total square footage by 0.333 ft before dividing by 27. Always add 10% extra volume for subgrade irregularities and form deflection.
Bagged Concrete vs Ready-Mix Trucks
One cubic yard of concrete requires exactly 45 pre-mix 80-pound bags or 60 pre-mix 60-pound bags. For projects exceeding 1.5 to 2.0 cubic yards (e.g., driveways, garage slabs, or large patios), ordering a ready-mix concrete truck delivery is significantly more cost-effective and prevents cold joints.
Rebar Grids & Structural Reinforcement
Concrete possesses immense compressive strength but weak tensile resistance. Installing #3 (3/8-inch) or #4 (1/2-inch) rebar in 12-inch or 18-inch on-center grids supported by plastic chairs prevents slab settlement cracking and reinforces load distribution under heavy vehicle weights.
Curing Hydration & Temperature Rules
Concrete solidifies via chemical hydration rather than drying out. Keep fresh concrete moist for a minimum of 7 days using curing blankets or spray sealers to attain 70% of rated compressive strength. Never pour concrete when freezing temperatures are expected within 48 hours.
